BERKELEY/OAKLAND SUPPORT SERVICES (BOSS)

Provides emergency, transitional and long-term direct services to the homeless, including housing, employment, advocacy, and education. Crisis counseling, mental health advocacy, money management, transitional housing, housing advocacy and counseling, emergency shelters (in Berkeley, Oakland and Hayward), substance abuse counseling, employment counseling, para-legal assistance, mail/messages, telephone use. Occasionally accepts donations of new sleeping bags and blankets and personal care items. At holiday time, accepts donations of new toys. Cannot accept clothing, food, or household items, but will refer you to others. Call first. Eligible: homeless, low- and no-income people. Cost: Free or sliding scale, depending on income. HARRISON HOUSE EMERGENCY SHELTER, BERKELEY/OAKLAND SUPPORT SERVICES (BOSS)

Shelter intake at BOSS office at 2100 MLK Jr. Way on a first-come, first-served basis. Shelter hours: from 5pm until 8am for single men and women; open 24 hours for families. No entry after 11pm for singles. Separate wing for women and children. No minors unless accompanied by a guardian. Shelter closes at 8am for the day. Facilities are available for 90-93 people a night. Free breakfast and dinner. Shower facilities available M-F 7pm-10pm. Cost: 50 cents. Bring towel, soap. Cost: 30% of income. Wheelchair accessible. WOMEN’S DAYTIME DROP-IN CENTER

Volunteers run this safe daytime refuge for homeless women and children providing support, food and access to emergency survival resources, information and referral, workshops. Weekly Public Health nurse visits. Provides light breakfast and hot lunch daily. Personal hygiene items available. Accepts donations of nonperishable food, household items, personal care items and toys. Call first. Eligible: Women only and/or children. Wheelchair accessible. Safe shelter, meals and support services to homeless women in crisis and their children. Shelter, transitional house, counseling; advocacy in housing, income, health, jobs, speakers. Accepts donations of clothes (especially children’s), food, household items, personal care items and toys. Call first, preferably on weekends. Eligible: Homeless women; preference to women with children. Wheelchair accessible. NOTE: Refuge is closed M-F 9-4 and clients must leave building. Contact: 547-4663.
