Berkeley International Food Festival

TRAVEL THE WORLD WITHOUT LEAVING THE BAY AREA
Take a culinary trip to explore and savor the aromas and tastes of worldwide cuisine without getting on an airplane or experiencing jet lag. Delight in the foods of India, Spain, Pakistan, Thailand, Jamaica, Hawaii, Mexico and Central America. The second annual Berkeley International Food Festival showcases West Berkeley's International Market District restaurants, specialty food markets and unique shops, and will feature related cultural activities.

pixThe Festival is a brightly defined promenade, fanning out from the intersection of San Pablo and University Avenues. Festivalgoers can visit eateries and food markets along the promenade for restaurant specials, cooking demonstrations, exotic food products and the utensils needed to prepare them, and the sampling of dozens of international dishes. Staged entertainment, specialty food booths, community tables and amusements are featured.

This year we have ten entertainment spots throughout the International District. Take a look at the map on the back of this section and begin your trip around the world without leaving the neighborhood.

pixThe main attraction is the Kitchen on Fire cooking stage, hosted by celebrity Chef MikeC., from the prestigious north Berkeley Kitchen on Fire cooking school. Take a seat in front of the large cooking stage and watch guest chefs, including Olivier Said, Soni Bhatia and Fredrico Felix, Thanu Chaichana and Kevin Hogan, prepare dishes from around the world, and then sample them. Hear straight-ahead jazz with the Ezana Edwards Quintet from 1pm to 4pm.

Catch the ecstasy of capoeira, samba and Brazilian food at Capoeira Arts Café and World Dance Center's new West Berkeley location.

Don't miss the Berkeley International Folk Festival (link) at Freight & Salvage Coffee House from 1:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. (after the food festival closes) with no admission charge.

Visit Mi Tierra Foods' Kiosko, decorated with colorful papel picado and featuring Latin American and Mexican food and a demonstration of the 5,000 year-old art of tortilla-making by Picanté. See Aztec dancers and Ballet Folklorico, listen to cumbia performed by Grupo Bahia Tropical, and be there for the Banda Tierra del Sol CD release.

pixTreat yourself to a Thai massage and get your fortune told while enjoying Thai food, crafts, music and dance at the Tuk Tuk Market's Thai Village.

There's fun for the whole family. Children and parents paint and plant at the YMCA play yard, with art projects presented by Blick Art Materials and gardening actvities by Berkeley's Secret Garden.

Paint the Town on public art canvases while viewing artists from Fourth Street Studio construct the Blick Community Mural on the West Berkeley YMCA. Enjoy food, crafts, and soundz from Funky Soul Stop.

pixAssault your senses at Ahlishan Fashion Fabrics' Sari Fashion Show, with Bombay Music DJs, belly dancing, Indian food prepared by Bombay Cuisine and India Chaat N' Sweets, henna painting, and cardamom ice cream -- all at Karma Corner. Karma Imports specializes in elegant home décor. Take advantage of the one-day outdoor sale - up to 50% off. Watch independent films, including Bollywood shorts, presented in association with East Bay Media Center and Berkeley Community Media.

Hula down to Royal Hawaiian ukulele music and Pacific Island dancers at the Temple Bar Grill and Tiki Lounge's luau, co-presented by Kona Beer. Come back after 5pm to our official after-festival PARTAY!

Sample paella at Spanish Table, then take a walk down the street a bit to Indus Village at 1920 San Pablo, where Kankana Bannerjee-Sen, from the family of famous Bollywood music directors, will perform Indian melodies from 1pm to 3pm. Go a few steps more to pick up a Palestinian deli treat and listen to the oud at Halal Food Market.

Visit Lanesplitter's Patio Garden for a pizza slice and a beer, then keep walking until you reach Jamaica Soul Restaurant where DJs will spin hot Reggae all day. Your next stop is to sample cheeses from around the world at Country Cheese, and learn about Food Justice from the Ecology Center's Farm Fresh Foods and students from Berkeley Youth Alternatives.

Cross the street and the folks at Shaan's Deli & Pizzaria will grill you their Festival Special - lamb, chicken, and beef kebabs with organic vegetables. And, while you are on the block, stop in at the newly opened Chaat 'N Curries for their special -- muglai paratha, a pocket bread filled with meat and veggies.

This is just a sampling of what will greet you at the Berkeley International Food Festival. Everyone in the District is waiting for a chance to tantilize your tastebuds and show you a good time on Sunday, June 24. Please join us.
